  • About Me

While I've had a couple of interesting careers so far, writing has always been a first love, and a few dreams have come true along the path: a handful of short story publications including three prizewinners, a 2007 novel from a small press, a stint as a newspaper columnist and features writer, an award for excellence in screenwriting. I also teach a class called Intro to Fiction Writing at Midlands Technical College, a six-week course designed as a peek behind the curtain of the writing life.

    Why do you write?

The act of writing must be an end in itself, which in challenging economic times for publishers has to be a true author's bread and butter: the work, an end worth pursuing apart from future remunerative rewards. Staying centered in the Tao also stokes creativity and drive.

    Any favorite authors? Books?

I've been a reader since a very young age, and my first favorite writer was probably Poe. I'm a great admirer of many authors: Wolfe, Faulkner, Chekov, PKD, Vonnegut, Tom Robbins, Phillip Roth, Henry Miller, John Irving, Walker Percy, Larry Brown, Harry Crews--too many to list with any sense of completeness.
