Why do you write?

I imagine things that I think are really cool, writing it down lets me build upon those imaginations instead of losing them... when being built upon I can take them further and define them in more detail.

Any favorite authors? Books?

As far as classics go: Leo Tolstoy to start with, loved War and Peace... Also enjoy Fyodor Dostoyevsky's books.

Sci-Fi / Fantasy I like the books of:
John Dickinson (Cup of the World),
Sergei Lukyanenko (The Watch Quadrilogy),
Michael Crichton's usually a good read,
Robert Reed (Marrow / The Well of Stars),
Isaac Asimov of course,
J.R.R.Tolkien (Favorite being The Hobbit),
Arther C. Clarke (A visionary),
Douglas Adams (needs no explanation),
Trudi Canavan (cool magical stuff).

I also love the star wars novels, some of the authors being:
Karen Traviss (only certain books, like the Mandalorian content other than the whole homosexual slant which is politically correct but not something I enjoy reading),
Michael Reaves (Coruscant Nights trilogy is a must read),
Joe Schreiber (for bringing zombies to the starwars universe),
Troy Denning and Aaron Allston (for legacy of the force),
Drew Karpyshyn (Darth Bane trilogy, mind blowing).

There's probably many more but thats all that comes to mind right now.
