Lancelot Meets Goya Meets Cortázar Meets Mowat
by Morgan Harlow
Of course we'd laughed
about it, the little owl
with jagged teeth
our Lance had drawn
beneath the note
that he had writ
to say that he was
doing fine
and not to worry
if he coughed
up mice sometimes,
though he could not
shake it,
this melancholia
and the ache
of knowing
it was much too late
to start anew.
fantastic. this flows beautifully, i like it a lot. the title drew me because of Cortázar, and the meeting was a surprise.
Such a wonder of a poem, Morgan. The lines are tight and perfect for the piece. Marvelous title.
I absolutely love this, Morgan!
Finnegan, Sam and Marcelle --
thank you for taking time to read and comment
o morgan!
love the internal rhymes, the way it reads out loud and fits the ear.
grazie
Really, really nice. Love:
"and not to worry
if he coughed
up mice sometimes,"
love the wonderful pause coming after the line: coughed up mice sometimes, then the repetition of the long "A" with shake, ache and late creating a sad hearted momentum...makes the last line turn just right
this is perfection, very lovely work Morgan...well done Blue Mesa for publishing this
thanks Gary, Susan, Doug and Kathy, great to hear your thoughts on this, I very much appreciate your reading
beautiful, crushing
word
thanks David and Nate for stopping by to read this one
Lovely!
love this picture of coughing up mice sometimes. great poem!
thanks, Cat and Lisa!
It's all been said so I'll just say I really enjoyed this!
Also:It's the economy--so much being said, so much left unsaid. That's what the best poetry does--informs us without spoon feeding us, like the moon it illuminates but doesn't exactly tell you where to look, although the bathing light, well, you know, it sees so much. Thanks for this beautiful poem.
many thanks, D.P.!
Yes--what everyone else said. Kudos!
I just stumbled onto this poem. Not quite certain how, but I am glad that I did.
Katrina and James, thank you
