Looking at the story pool, I'm wondering if it would help to come up with a tagging convention for the story challenge. It's going to get a little unwieldy in here once stories from more months pile on top of each other.
If we agreed on a way to tag challenge stories (say, ssc-dec09), then we could link to searches for that tag from here and get a list of only that month's entries (cf. http://www.fictionaut.com/tags/humor). If we wanted to, we could then remove older stories from the pool so it's always reserved for the current challenge (or leave them and use the tags to search for current entries.)
The winners could be tagged ssc-winner and be commemorated in their own discussion thread for posterity's sake.
I agree. I was just trying to figure out how to get Aliens off this group site so that it wouldn't be included in the judging of the December Challenge.
Okay, never mind, I did "oust" mine out of there. But yes, we shouldn't have to do it that way, just have them somehow archive themselves once the month is over. Any suggestions?
I was wondering if older stories should be ousted. For posterity, we could link all the entries & the winner in the relevant discussion (http://www.fictionaut.com/groups/short-story-challenge/threads/149). Tags could help, too.
I sort of like the idea of letting it grow. Since they are posted chronologically, there's no need to delete stories. I like that you'll be able to look back and see a bunch of stories, loosely linked and all written specifically for Fn. Most writers are also self-identifying the story challenge month in the author comment. And since the stories go to the main page, all one needs to know for judging, is which was posted first. Am I missing something? The tags haven't really been too useful as yet, as far as I can tell.
I see what you're saying, it's more fun to keep them all in the pool. The only thing that doesn't immediately work is sorting the group pool by recommended to see who's winning.
The tags can work if we used them. I tagged the stories, and now you can search by tag to get a list of just that months' submissions:

If we tag all winners ssc-winner, then you can get a list of those, too:

Yeah, geeky, but I can't help it.
I didn't realize there was a recommended. I see it now.
Great ideas, Jurgen.
Each month a new challenge will be posted to the discussion with rules for the month. This is a public group and all stories written for the challenge will be posted to the Fn main page and then added to the group.
At the end of the month, the story with the most faves wins the challenge.
The winner of the challenge gets to post the rules for the next month's challenge.
In the event of a tie, all tying winners get to post a challenge for the next month, with challenges run simultaneously. The challenger with the most faves, of all the simultaneous challenges for that month, gets to post the rules for the next month's challenge.
And always remember: fiction is not a competitive sport.
