I am now at the point where I am feeling comfortable enough to add a picture to my stories. I have read everything on the forums about this topic, yet nothing seems to work. I have noticed that when pictures are used they most often have a Google attribution and come from a website. Really don't want a website. So what am I missing here? I appreciate how busy you all are so I am thanking those who decide to help me with this in advance. Thank you!

MaryAnne, I have no idea how it's done. Why not messg directly someone who has done it. I'm sure they will tell you.
Tell her! Tell us all how this is done! Is anyone out there listening to our plight???

I'm taking a stab at describing this. First try (if f'naut doesn't mess up the formatting in this message):

1. Find the picture you want to include. You need to get its URL.

2a. In Firefox, if you right click, you should be able to choose "Copy Image Location." This saves the image URL to your clipboard so you can paste it.
OR
2b. In IE, right click on the image and choose Properties. Right click and copy the Address line from the box that pops up. This saves the image URL to your clipboard so you can paste it

In either case, (it'll look like a URL, only with .jpg, .gif, or .png on the end, http://somewebsiteaddress.com/images/someimagename.png )

3. Paste the URL into a blank text document.

4. You need to put HTML code around the image URL to make it show up. It needs to look like this: < img src="http://somewebsiteaddress.com/images/someimagename.png" >

Start by putting quotes around your image url. In front of it, add this:

<img src=

At the end, add a closing brace:

>

5. If you want to be fancy, you can change the size of your image by playing with

height="200"
width="300"

Change the numbers to whatever is appropriate. Experiment.

6. The whole shebang looks like:
< img src="http://somewebsiteaddress.com/images/someimagename.png" height="200"
width="300" >

Formatting in Step 4 didn't come through, let me try again:

1. Find the picture you want to include. You need to get its URL.

2a. In Firefox, if you right click, you should be able to choose "Copy Image Location." This saves the image URL to your clipboard so you can paste it.

3. Paste the URL into a blank text document.

4. You need to put HTML code around the image URL to make it show up. It needs to look like this: < img src="http://somewebsiteaddress.com/images/someimagename.png" >

Start by putting quotes around your image url. In front of it, add this:

< img src=

At the end, add a closing brace:

>

5. If you want to be fancy, you can change the size of your image by playing with

height="200"
width="300"

Change the numbers to whatever is appropriate. Experiment.

6. The whole shebang looks like:
< img src="http://somewebsiteaddress.com/images/someimagename.png" height="200"
width="300" >

Lynn, thank you so much - except that now I'm wishing the Internet Tech guy from SNL (hope somebody else out there remembers him) would just come to my house, stand behind my chair and say, "Just. Get. Up." And then sit down and do this for me. Maybe I can track down a ten year old who understands this stuff and pay him/her to do it. Soooo not a computer person. What ever happened to a simple CUT then PASTE? Must have gone to the same place my old CD's are going. . .

Okay Lynn, I'm almost there. I followed your excellent directions carefully and at some point realized I was trying to move these photos from My Pictures (where I'd initailly put them) instead of directly from Google images. Haven't had the time to road testthe last step yet and will let you know if it works - See, not quite as dumb as I appear. . . Mar

I should have added:
My directions only work when you are using an image that is online already. F'naut has no current way to upload images for use in Author Notes.

Fictionaut used to allow you to upload a picture directly into the top of a story. It was as easy as pie. I had a great photo on my story "The Hollow" and now it's gone. Jurgen explained to me what happened with this, but I forget what the problem was. It would surely be a nice feature to get back though.

Actually, this same technique will let you add images to the body of your story. And it's probably a better place to put them than the Author's Notes because if your image is too wide it makes the right column look odd.

I'm such a geek. May the Fourth be with you.

Thanks, Lynn. And yes, this used to be a built-in feature, but for technical reasons, we had to "temporarily" disable it -- and it hasn't been back since. I'd like to bring the images back, but our development backlog at this point is huge -- it's a matter of resources.

So, if you want to work around that in the meantime by sticking photos into the author's note, it's ok with us, especially if you can adjust the size so the images don't break the layout.

One thing we would ask though is that you only add photos you have the right to use so we don't get hit with copyright claims. One way to find photos that you can freely share is to do an advanced search on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/search/advanced/) and checking the box at the bottom that says "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content."

Wow! You guys are so darn generous with your time and info it makes me want to weep. Okay, maybe that's my allergies. At any rate, Lynn, don't apologize for being a geek - they secretly run the world. the rest of us are just along for the ride. You knew that didn't you? And Jürgen, thanks for carefully protecting the site. Susan, since I know you have my back - you can count on me always having yours! Even though I am a newbie here, I feel like I've finally found a home for my words. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
