1. Not because it improves my sleep but because it has to it some suggestions of local perturbations, this little summary came from Google's AI Overview (Google has begun releasing Googlebooks in laptop and wireless phone versions both [I think] loaded and equipped with the Google Gemini AP-I model):
AI Overview: The convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI)—and general/superintelligence (often referred to as SI)—with quantum computing is already underway as a mutual-dependency cycle, with broad commercial utility and fault-tolerant integration expected between 2028 and 2035.
What Is Happening Right Now (Reverse Convergence):
Contrary to the popular myth that quantum computers will simply plug in and make AI instantly faster, the influence is currently flowing in reverse:
• AI for Quantum Control: Quantum processors are fragile analogue systems prone to severe environmental noise and qubit drift. Classical and machine learning models are actively used today to calibrate pulse shapes, decode error-correction syndromes, and manage quantum circuits better than traditional lookup tables.
• Verifiable Milestones: Hardware milestones—such as Google's Willow processor and recent quantum echoes algorithms—have demonstrated early quantum advantage on specific calculations.
• Cloud Access: Organizations aren't buying physical quantum mainframes; they access them as a service through platforms like Amazon Braket, Microsoft Azure Quantum, and D-Wave Leap for specific optimization and grid-testing workloads.
The Timeline to Full Integration:
• 2026–2030 (The Hybrid Transition): Industry estimates point to 2028–2030 as the window for practical, fault-tolerant, commercially viable quantum systems. AI will act as the orchestrator—managing workflows, routing heavy multi-variable math to quantum accelerators, and handling classical interfaces.
• 2030–2035 (Deep Convergence): Scaled hybrid classical-quantum architectures are projected to mature, helping absorb the exponential power and energy demands that classical GPU data centers face.
Key Impact Areas When AI and Quantum Merge:
• Energy & Infrastructure: Quantum-assisted optimization could reduce the massive dependency on hundreds of thousands of classical GPU servers currently straining global power grids.
• Chemistry & Medicine: Transitioning from trial-and-error medicine to exact, molecular-level quantum simulations for drug discovery and material science.
• Cybersecurity (Q-Day): Advanced quantum processors threaten legacy public-key encryption (like RSA and ECC via Shor's algorithm). Because of this, tech and infrastructure firms (such as Cloudflare) and standards bodies (like NIST) are aggressively pushing post-quantum cryptographic transitions with targets around 2029.
s. again: It is anyone's guess (even or especially any quantum-equipped AP-I [artificial proto-intelligence]'s) what practical miracles will come to pass from all this tech-conjuring: do stay tuned.
2. The October 2026 Diagnostic Discussion from NOAA's CPC last Thursday suggests relatively unimpaired El Nino conditions persisting through the end of March and through much if not all of April (with ENSO conditions reverting to neutral by the end of May). Strong oceanic-atmospheric coupling persists. At least moderate drought in Panama so far has cut Canal Zone traffic by around 20% but the present drought may not have peaked yet: again, stay tuned.
3. This month October 2026 I've been anticipating for years, and the date 28 October if I recall correctly, marking both and together the tricentennial of the (first) publication of Swift's (Jonathan's) Gulliver's Travels (with the formal original title, et cetera, and all the lamentable printer's errors of the first edition).
My copy of the Norton Critical Edition (2d ed.) of the 1735 Dublin text reproduces a letter from Swift to his French translator dated July 1727 containing this advertisement: "The partisans of Gulliver--they number a good many amongst us--maintain that his book will endure as long as our language, because it draws its merit not from certain modes or manners of thought and speaking, but from a series of observations on the imperfections, the follies, and the vices of man. . . ." --so three centuries along and still a rich readable treasure.
The peculiar relevance of the Third Voyage for today I hope would stimulate re-readings of the entire satire or perhaps short dives into the Third Voyage, notoriously weaker than the material in Voyages One, Two, and Four. In its day the voyage of Swift's hurling of satiric darts at the Royal Society and other contemporary worthies, today across three centuries the Flying Island of Laputa has perhaps grown into one apt metaphor for the overlordship of computer engineering adduced in Point 1. above. The career of the Flying Island also otherwise accommodates the broader ambitions of contemporary scientists, engineers, chemists, metallurgists, et al., across many accomplished sciences and applied technologies. --It remains up to us to decide how to esteem their generosity.
The Houyhnhnm-Yahoo distinction proper to the Fourth Voyage does not fail to apply to the characterizations of working human perspective offered in Voyage Three, since the characterizations of human perspectives provided in Voyages One by Lilliput and Blefuscu and in Voyage Two by the Brobdingnagians apply equally well throughout to paint a four-perspective account of typical human action and inaction, thought and unthought and non-thought.
Trusting in the survival of Swift's brilliant satire if not of the language itself, God otherwise help all poor readers of 2326 as of 2026.
