I can't even begin to imagine a world without him. He was always on our side. He spoke to all generations, in all countries. We were so lucky to have been alive at the same time as Brian. He never gave up on the human things that will always matter. Love and mercy to you and your friends, Brian sang, when we needed to hear it the most. One of a kind. The heavens have blinked to shed a tear, and so have I. Goodbye, friend, you made a beautiful difference.

I've seen Brian Wilson two times in my life. The first time was in 1996 at Holmby Hills Park. Wilson was walking around the perimeter of the park with his nurse, a small Filipino woman wearing pink scrubs. Wilson was wearing a blue bath robe with pajama pants and slippers. He was not wearing a shirt. I got close enough to him to hear what he was saying to his nurse, and what he was saying was this: "Are you older now? Is there something that you can't find? I should save my words for another time, but I should use them now. I can't believe I didn't spare myself. I can't believe it. Is there something that you can't find? Are you feeling down? That's something I can't hide." The second time I saw Wilson was in 2021 at Holmby Hills Park. Wilson was walking around the perimeter of the park with his nurse, a small Filipino woman wearing pink scrubs. Wilson was wearing a blue bath robe with pajama pants and slippers. He was not wearing a shirt. I got close enough to him to hear what he was saying to his nurse, and what he was saying was this: "We all know he's the candy man. But can he taste you? Can he taste you because you want him to? They say this is a one-way week. But if I saw it that way maybe I'd say that I miss you, baby." My favorite Beach Boys song is "It's A Beautiful Day," from the 1979 movie 'Americathon,' which is about the collapse of the United States. "It's a Beautiful Day" was written by Mike Love and Al Jardine. What I remember most about 'Americathon' was Peter Riegert's character stealing President John Ritter's wife, and Ritter not being upset at all because Ritter was having an affair with a Vietnamese pop star named Mouling Jackson, who, in the throes of passion, says to Ritter, "Come on man, soup's on." As a child I couldn't understand how people could just leave each other like that and not care. When the movie was over I remember the only thing my dad said about it was that the President's wife was a horrible person. And then he said, "She reminds me of your mom." My dad didn't like the Beach Boys at all. He thought they ruined Los Angeles. He thought all that surf-fun-in-the-sun-let's-get-in-your-T-Bird-and-go shtick was pure bullshit. He said he was at a party in the Hollywood Hills during the early 1970s and that Dennis Wilson stole his date.

John Lennon on such things: "That's a load of crap that I discovered I had a latent talent. I just did it. I've no talent, except a talent for being happy or a talent for skiving. Somebody wants to bust open this whole talent myth, wise everybody up. Politicians have no talent. It's all a con."

""We're not better than anybody else. We're all the same. We're as good as Beethoven. Everyone's the same inside. You need the desire and the right circumstances, but it's nothing to do with talent, or training or education."

Once I went to see Brian and the Beach Boys at a state fair. I was at the side of the stage, so I could see Brian at the piano sitting or hiding behind a huge amp. He looked disheveled and bewildered but determined. He added vocals to each song. Afterwards I met him at a fence in the back of the stage where his camper was parked. He stopped and said hello. He was huge, wore overalls and looked like an overfed farm boy, but when he talked it was with quiet authority and sensitivity and kindness. I told him I liked his music and he said, thanks, I appreciate you telling me. We shook hands and he lumbered off.
