"Joyce, really, though, really ... "
(after the LAUGHTER dies down ... )
"Did you ever ... think of writing an 'oater'?"
(we're at it again -- the audience ERUPTS in laughter, and JOYCE CAROL OATES let's her bangs bob down in front of her FACE: " 'tis true, 'tis true ... " kind of LOOK)
"Well, I've TRIED ... " (she says after a moment — and the audience erupts again, she places a LOCK of hair behind an EAR) " ... but you know what they say." (she takes a sip from her DIET SODA -- a DIET COKE™, in fact)
"No, what do they say ... ??"
(the audience TITTERS but doesn't ERUPT — to they've SPENT it, already)
"Oh, you know -- " (she waves her HAND) " ... what is they say?? Oh, you know, like when Lester Bangs asked Lou REED: 'Why don't you write something like, "Sugar, Sugar?"' and he goes —'Aw, man, I wish I could'!
"I wish I *could* ... "
THE END
(of Joyce Carol OATES!!!)
