David Ackley
Amen.
Oh, Ackley's blocking here. Wet lovers resting afterwards on sperm-stiffened sheets under the "assault" of July heat, waiting for the husband to come home, evoking for her the chewable tropical air of Zaire, where she and the husband find quotidien low-grade embassy small talk "sparkling and sharp" because she and the husband get a thousand bucks a pop to report on it to some George Smiley lamplighter. All in 5 or 6 words, too. Ackley's monster good.
And Carol Reid's acute eye for that usually-unremarked moment of falling "in and out of love in twenty seconds," and, in only two lines, the "curious glint" in an old woman's eye on a young man in spring "from light years away," and the graciousness that would become him in his reflection of that. The sensibility in play here is awesome, and to be able to put words to it, too, my!
I'll return to this list soon to read these honored stories. I am sure they're wonderful. This note serves as a bookmark to bump it up a notch.
Wonderful news.
