I always thought this would be a cheap/floozy/exploitative/50s B movie because of the photos of Caroll Baker from the opening scene and the fact that it's not that well known.
Never knew it was based on a Tennessee Williams play.
Watched it last night and thought it was incredible.
Karl Malden and Eli Wallach are fantastic, as were all the supporting cast.
Though I thought Carroll Baker's southern accent was (as Hollywood amost NEVER gets it right) just a bit much.
There were a lot of subversive movies in the Fifties. The Fifties were not as milky and rigid as historians would like us all to think. There was a lot of bubbly under that composed surface.
She was fantastic in The Big Country.
Powerful performances all around. Strong film.
