Yep, excellent movie.
Not that the Oscars are a barometer of how good a performance is or anything, but Duvall lost to Jack Nicholson that year (who won for As Good As It Gets), and his performance is light years ahead of what Nicholson was doing, which was a sort of Jack Torrance-lite. And then Roberto Benigni wins the next year over Jeff Bridges' Lebowski, possibly one of the greatest comedic performances ever. The Oscars are stupid.
From beginning to end, The Apostle is accurate, engaging, and worthy. Great performances all around and so perfectly representative of the kind of Christianity most people never experience.
A classic.
Haven't seen it.
Trying to find a copy...
Love the film. I know that life - I know that world. Also know Paul Bagget - Duvall based his performance on him. He has a bit part. Great soundtrack.
I'd read that RD wrote it ten years before it was filmed, no studio would touch it, finally had to finance it on his own.
My ONLY hitch of appreciation of the film is the apparent age-discrepancy between he and his wife and mother.
Appears a bit too old for the first, and the second appears a bit too young for him.

@Chris
It's a sin and a shame.
One of my all-time favorites but I live in a travel trailer so I'm downsizing my collection. Right now I'm fixated on "The Walking Dead," which I never saw on television. So I'm on season 2.
Speaking of religious movies streaming on zer Flix, I found this to be surprisingly well-done:
Misti, throw out the WD and grab The Returned, one of the best TV series ever about the supernatural. No comparison between the two, IMO.

Will check out now. Thanks, Charlotte. But it's too late. I'm addicted to WD. Got season 3 on the way from eBay! ha.
I prefer "uncanny" to gore, believe me. "Twin Peaks" is my all-time favorite series. "The Twilight Zone" is a close second. I never thought I'd get into a zombie show. But I like the writing.
