So…Cherise and I are in the elevator when she uses the word ‘banging’ in her sentence. The question I would like to put up for discussion does not stem from a critique of the word choice (after all, banging and elevators are certainly no strangers), but a growing debate between us on its pronunciation. Until yesterday, I have never heard the word spoken with the first g being hard (now that’s funny). For example…bang-ging. So I asked her to repeat the word and again I heard bang-ging. For some reason I automatically thought of Billy Crystal doing his imitation of a jewish uncle…what is smegma anyways? Anyhoo, I told her that I was pretty sure that the common way to say the word was with the first g being soft. Ahhh….soft. What say ye? Bang-ging (Forest Gumpish) or good old fashioned banging (as in or out of an elevator?
