Really useful as a writer's manual:

Stanley Fish's "How to Write a Sentence"

Also really helpful relating to things writerly:

Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics and, even more so, Making Comics.

Bill, thanks for the suggestions. An editor who rejected a piece of mine kindly (?),yes kindly sent along a suggestion for "Self - Editing For Fiction Writers" by Renni Browne and Dave King. Am finding it quite helpful. . .

Oh, I do love that book and kind of hate myself for it :) Not so much a fan of Fish's pedagogy, but this is a great book.

Yes, that's just what I felt!

McCloud's book is a must read. It, like Calvino's "if on a winter's night, a traveler" taught me more about the elements of writing than any writer's manual.

"McCloud's book... taught me more about the elements of writing than any writer's manual."
Me too. Couldn't agree more. Mind blowing.
I even use Understanding Comics in my intro to film class. I assign Making Comics in my creative writing class.
