About Me

I grew up in the foothills of the Appalachain Mountains. I currently teach Creative Writing at John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH and am working on novel based on my mother's move from South Korea to rural southeastern Kentucky when she was nineteen. My work has appeared in Blackbird, Narrative, and The Louisville Review.

Why do you write?

I write because I'm not good at anything else. And because the only thing that helps us make sense of the world is to read and write stories.

Any favorite authors? Books?

Robert Penn Warren, James Baldwin, Lee Smith, the Richards--Bausch, Ford, Yates, Marilynne Robinson, Thom Jones, Jill McCorkle, The O'Connors: Frank and Flannery, Larry Brown, Silas House, Pam Duncan, Jhumpa Lahari, Steve Yarbrough, and others.
