I guess I am what you call a pre-published writer. I've been published in a few lit mags and I have just recently decided to make the leap into full-time writing, doing some freelancing and general hustling to fund my life's necessities while I complete "the novel". In trying to complete "the novel" I've been distracted by two awesome short stories and a volume of poetry that refused to keep quiet so while writing "the novel", I am also shopping around for publishers of short stories and chapbooks. My next phase is querying agents. I think. I admit that outside of being able to tell a pretty good story, I have no idea what I'm doing. Yet.
People and possibility, life and an overactive imagination fuel my creativity. I write as an outlet, as a release, and as a means of putting all the colorful images in my head into words. I love words--another reason why I write. I love the ability of words to fit together to make pictures. Beautiful pictures, ugly pictures. The fact that words can make you have a visceral reaction to a story about people and places that don't exist, times that have not yet existed--that is the allure of words for me. And that is why I write.
My all-time favorite authors are Toni Morrison and Joyce Carol Oates. I also enjoy Percival Everett, Gregory McGuire, Dave Eggers and Tayari Jones. A few of my favorite books are Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch and Song of Solomon but trust me there are others. Many, many others.
