Some of my recent favourites are Simon R Green (his "Nightside" series), John Saul, Gail Z Martin (her "Chronicles of the Necromancer" series), Jim Butcher, Robert B Parker (great for seeing how good dialogue is done), Alan Campbell, Dean Koontz, Laurell K Hamilton.
