Why do you write?

When I was 19 I heard a writer say "Write only if it's a mortal need, because you'd be physically ill, insane, and probably dead if you don't write."

Later, another writer who'd been there rolled his eyes and said, "Ridiculous. Write because you have something to say."

I guess a third writer tries to find a balance between these.
