I'm the author of a short story collection Beautiful Girls (MacAdam/Cage) and a young-adult novel Rosie and Skate (Random House). I've been nominated for a Pushcart prize, and I'm a recipient of fellowships from the Jerome Foundation and the New York Foundation of the Arts. I teach fiction writing at NYU, the Writer's Voice of the West Side Y in New York City, and online at UCLA Extension.
What fuels my creativity? Walking, being outside, reading good books, doing new things and not allowing myself to get into ruts. I can be a hopeless creature of habit.
My top five: The Member of the Wedding Lolita Jane Eyre Foreign Affairs Pride and Prejudice
I find everything by Carson McCullers compelling and readable. I'd also read anything by Mary Gaitskill and Barbara Gowdy.
Some young-adult novels I love: Weetzie Bat Dinky Hocker Shoots Smack Owl in Love
