About Me

I've written nine novels, five published by Penguin and four, under the name of Nina Bell, for Little Brown. They are The Empty Nesters, Sisters-in-Law, Lovers & Liars and The Inheritance. I also write books about interiors with stylist Liz Bauwens - current titles include Fleamarket Chic, Simply Country, Thrifty Chic and Country in the City.

I have been a journalist for many years, as staff on She, Good Housekeeping and Harpers Bazaar, and have written freelance for a wide range of publications including The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Financial Times' How to Spend It magazine, The Independent and many others.

Why do you write?

I write for a living, like Samuel Johnson and many others. And I write in order to make sense of the shape of things. Sometimes I write for the same reason that I read, which is to communicate with and understand other people and places.

Any favorite authors? Books?

George Eliot (Middlemarch), Jane Austen (most), Daphne du Maurier (many, but especially Rebecca), good psychological and other thriller writers like John Le Carre, Sophie Hannah, Peter James and Nicci French, good commercial fiction like Marian Keyes and Dorothy Koomson, and any fiction with good characterisation, like William Boyd, Rose Tremain, Hilary Mantel and Jonathan Franzen.
