The lightbulb explodes

by Samuel Derrick Rosen

No such thing as an empty space, can you hear the ants as they converse?
Or your descendents as they pray?  There is no mass that's solid,
it just appears that way.  No such thing as an empty space,
every mind is repulsive.  No such thing as an empty space,
every eye is sublime.  No such thing as an empty space,

put on your mascara and your lipstick, put your conscience on my lap.
No such thing as an empty space, think an Andy Warhol painting.
No such thing as an empty space, there is dancing in the evening.
No such thing as an empty space, see eternity in less than an hour,
see the murderousness of April, see the power of the human hand

subvert the stars and the planets and the rows and rows of lilies,
see the director yell "cut"
see black ink on white paper,
see the righteous ballerina concede the law of gravity,
see haiku drown in the eye of the man with the iron heart,

see the lightbulb explode in a universe of lightbulbs,
see serenity on the edge of Columbus,
see history grow so hot it has no memory of ice.
See the empty space declare there is no such thing as an empty space.
