Sea Monster Metaphysics

by Samuel Derrick Rosen

To the hem of Neptune and the soul of brevity
and the dialects of drunken monkeys,
sands diminish into sands, waves
die imperceptibly, brace a hibernating time,
one of mermaids always seen
by the naivete of sailors.  This is sea monster metaphysics.

The Atlantic increasingly further
the closer that it gets.  Melville spouts
anemones, and visions of Queequeg
battering Ahab with the carcass of a sea-lion.

Jules Verne whistles somewhat nervously a tune
of something approaching something,
the contradictions of H2O,
sonatas of sundown tides, shanties of afternoon moons.
