Ikea People

by R. Daniel Lester

Ikea people live in
gigantic blue-and-yellow homes
on the outskirts of cities
usually near a highway
in communal, open-concept spaces
They are very neat and design-conscious
and are always smiling in the photos
in the frames
on the bookshelves
They are also very patient
They do not mind if we sit on their couches
Or lie down on their beds
But do not be fooled
They are not as smart as they seem
Their books have no words inside
And their TVs and computers are fakes
But they do have cheap hot dogs
And lots of parking
So maybe they are fairly smart after all
One thing is for sure: they are shy
Because they are never home when we arrive
