In a bar

by P. Jonas Bekker

She came into the bar as he turned a page and sipped his vodka. She sat closer to him than she needed to. She smelled of a recent cigarette. She ordered coffee and slowly drank it staring at him.
He turned another page and took another sip of his drink.
She took a deep breath and said:
"What you reading?"
"Ovid", he replied.
"Ars Amatoria? What language is that?"
"You read Latin? Drink vodka at ten in the morning? What are you?"
"I'm just a guy in a bar", he said as he turned another page.
