You pick up the receiver and start talking without hesitation. "Let her up." Thumbing the cord.
Before you hang up you hear an exclamation. You pause, cough into your throat.
You hold the receiver back up to your ear.
"No, sir, it's the police for you."

I really like the mystery of this - It seems to be part of something larger. Who is the narrator? The woman? What act of violence is taking place?
