Sonnet 10

by Lars Townsend

We don't watch the Honored robin's newspeak
address the silent worm legislature
on C-SPAN  or CNN every week.
Raccoons, skunks, snails and bears I'd wager
don't congress to Robert's Rules of Order
yet are not their debates bloodthirsty
exchanges between taxonomic order?
It's with the silence of controversy
that I walk through this colonized wood,
my presence normalizing, but echos
of insurrection, chirp and howl in the hood.
If tomorrow, the world were these meadows,
and human politics were in recess
would a new democracy, coalesce?
