Poem 1

by Ellie Lee

Now's the time

…maybe.

Maybe now's the time.

Forward or back

and half awake,

where does it end?

For pity's sake,

For pity's sake who knows?

Question, question

again and again

fuck the pain.

And…

where does it end?

 Here.

Our show at the end of the pier.

all our flickering, bickering,

knickerless knickering.

The whys, the eyes

and the stolen ayes,

days snatched

plans hatched

matches matched

…already.

I undress for you.

Our words unheard

are written

once, twice bitten

 bitten

you, you, you

always you.

Back then

back when

breakfast in bed was

coffee

and

a shared cigarette.

Begin at the beginning.

We cannot win

we swim against the tide -

we tried.

Aaaaah, she smiled.

Listen!

Listen. In the quiet,

listen.

Listen for the clicks,

for the finger flicks,

the feel of your cat-lick kisses.

I cry,

try to forget.

Forget

the lies I've spewed

the words we've chewed.

Give

me

solitude.

I don't want a man with attitude

Give me

a gentle

man.
