A few overnight thoughts re: yesterday's discussion. Please know that I'm just brainstorming here, and extremely open to feedback and additional ideas. :)

First, a couple of ideas about our Unique Selling Proposition(s):

    1) WAG was born on fictionaut, a unique, ground-breaking and well-known writing community

    2) WAG promotes the craft of writing 'across genres,' i.e. we are broad-based and inclusive, bringing together academic and non-academic writers committed to the craft.

Second, let's aim for a little low-hanging fruit, a few ideas for no or low-cost activities:

    * a logo, to brand the group and its members' work
    * a web site, with all the afore-mentioned features as well as an online bookstore
    * a blog
    * a vlog, perhaps with online interviews/discussions with WAG members
    * a kickoff project, possibly an anthology or special project ebook with some of the proceeds donated to charity (literacy, perhaps? or a writing camp for kids?)
    * organized use of online promotional tools: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and others
    * special virtual events, based in Skype or an online meeting site. Readings can be one kind of event, or discussions on a writing topic, or other ideas
    * writing-based online games. Captcha could be one. We can also host games that people can win, perhaps a title (I'm thinking of foursquare's Mayorships here) and/or free books by WAG members
    * PR to promote the group and its activities

    Any feedback or other ideas?

Good ideas, Kim. I like "bringing together academic and non-academic writers committed to the craft." Yes.

Especially interested in “a kickoff project, possibly an anthology or special project ebook with some of the proceeds donated to charity (literacy, perhaps? or a writing camp for kids?)”.

That reminds me of the ebook anthology that Frank Hinton does each year at Metazen as a fundraiser for specific causes. She's done that for the past of couple of years at least.

It's a time-tested idea. A lot of organizations do similar things to raise awareness. We don't necessarily have to re-invent the wheel. :)

Kim, these are excellent thoughts. A web site will be essential and, hopefully, this is something we can begin soon. Nonetheless, I worry about haste in that regard. I'm sure that there are many who would be willing to 'volunteer' the launch of a vehicle for that web presence, but I believe it's essential for our web site to project high standards of quality. This might necessitate a cost for both development and maintenance, but one that could eventually bring a return for the investment.

The kickoff projects you suggest sound intriguing, particularly the idea of an anthology. We seem to possess a lot of talent here and, hopefully, we'll gather more rather quickly, once people understand that this is not a pipe dream. The greater the quality of such a venture, the more salient our 'brand.' Good idea.

The idea of "bringing together academic and non-academic writers committed to the craft" is perfectly aligned with goals our organization should foster. In fact, I want to launch another thread here very soon that addresses the issue of a broadly inclusive membership, one that aptly represents the concept of 'writers across genres.'

    Thanks, Kim!
