    During my short teaching career, I collected a bunch of first lines I loved. There was Marquez, 100 Years of Solitude—Many years later, when he faced the firing squad... . And then there was Tom Robbins, They found the magician's underwear floating... .

    I'm trying to remember others. Anna Karenina, much noted, but not one of my favorites.

    With the way that Amazon displays books, with the first line as part of the tease, it seems like first lines are more important than ever in terms of making an impression. Agree? Disagree?
