Hi mother,
what a great joy to eat your bread again!
Whaaaaat!?!
James--
dris is happy to once more have access to his mother's cooking (see "bread").
In the film, the young boy is breaking the unwritten rule of requesting more porridge (which is not to say he likes it, or that he wants to deprive others, but that he simply feels he did not have enough to satisfy his hunger).
This causes an uproar, as all involved have, as a means of insuring their survival in the "pack," so to speak, internalized the rule of suppression of personal and physical needs for food, comfort (psychological or otherwise) of any sort.
It's simply not done.
Hope this helps!
;-)
