The Fiction Editor is an integral part of the quarterly magazine operations at THIS. If you are unfamiliar with our magazine, we strongly suggest that you read our archives prior to applying.

    Responsibilities:
    - Read and comment on all fiction pieces submitted to THIS within five weeks of receipt.

    - Per our style guidelines, copyedit and format accepted fiction pieces for publication, which happens four times per year (fall, spring, summer, and winter).

    - Work closely with writers and other fiction editors on edits in preparation for publication in a sensitive yet straightforward manner.

    - Communicate with the magazine Editor on progress of editing and formatting.

    - Liaison with writers for each issue and follow up with writers as necessary.
Solicit fiction submissions through personal and professional networks.

    - Expected time commitment: 3-5 hours per week. Minimum length of participation is 4 issues (1 year).

    Preferred Qualifications:
    - Editing experience for an online or print publication.
    - Passion for reading fiction, including works from the slush pile.
    - Familiarity with fiction writing in all forms and styles, including short fiction, flash fiction, and long-form excerpts.
    - Strong attention to detail.
    - Ability to meet editorial deadlines, especially in the weeks preceding an issue's publication.
    - Ability to coherently and concisely state personal opinions on individual pieces.
    - Familiarity with or willingness to learn the Google Documents platform.
    - Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition and/or Strunk and White's The Elements of Style.

The Fiction Editor position, like all positions at THIS, is unpaid.

However, you will be listed with a bio on our masthead. You will gain editing experience and work closely with the magazine's other Fiction Editors and the magazine's Editor.

    TO APPLY:
Please e-mail thiszine [AT] gmail [DOT] com with thoughtful, yet brief, responses to the following questions:

    1. Why do you want to work at THIS?

    2. What is your editing experience? Please specifically state whether you have direct experience editing fiction writing.

    3. Where do you regularly go to read fiction (print or online)? Who are some of your favorite writers of fiction?

    4. When considering a story for publication, what do you look for? What turns you off?

    5. What story published in our magazine is a favorite of yours and why?

Type your responses in the body of an e-mail. No attachments will be opened.

    Thanks for your interest!
