Can you talk a little about what the format will look like? All I can find now are a few blog comments, and it's hard to extrapolate from those...

    Thanks,

    Bill

    Hi Bill,

Do you mean the general aesthetic/appearance?

The format should be similar to what you see now: a simple front page showcasing each story/poem/piece of writing with title and an excerpt that one can click on to expand.

I'm expecting to have to do a little roadtesting of the zine layout in the beginning, though, so I can't really be more specific than that. It may change as I work out what works best and get feedback from readers/writers.

Overall, I want it to remain clean, easy to use and elegant. If I use illustrations they will be likely tangential - feathers, for example, or odd elements from stories. There won't be any heaving nekkid bodies.

But I'm wondering if the site's not showing properly if you're only seeing blog comments, that doesn't sound right. Which browser are you using?

    Nikki,

I use firefox on windows. When I go to the homepage, http://featherlit.com/, it looks like a wordpress themed blog, with four test comments across the middle of the page. I'm just wondering what the eventual site will look like. Will there be a homepage just for the journal? Will each issue have a table of contents? Will each story have it's own page, with contributor's bio right there?

Here are a couple examples that seem fairly well done to me, without too much coding trouble (I know both the editors, neither one is a coder or layout specialist):

    http://www.umbrellajournal.com/
    http://www.stringpoet.com/

If you look under the hood of that second one, you'll see it's also done with wordpress.

I know they're both poetry journals, but there are plenty of examples of good similar fiction layouts. I only mention it because I think you'll get better submissions with a really good layout. There's nothing worse than sweating blood over a story, only to find it go up in something less than the most favorable light! ;)

    Best,

    Bill

how can we tell if our own work is erotic?

    Hi Bill.

I appreciate your concerns. I'm an artist as well as a writer and the aesthetics, as well as the usability, of the site is of great importance to me.

That said, ideas of what is aesthetically pleasing differ!

I'm aiming for the most simple and clean design I can produce.

Thanks for the links, I'll look at them with interest.

    Meg - well, there's a question!

In the context of FeatherLit, I'm using the term 'erotic' as a handy short word to mean 'involving sex or sexuality or sensuality related'. A phrase which doesn't roll off the tongue so easily.

I'm interested in work that the individual writer thinks of as erotic. That may or may not include sex, and it certainly doesn't need to be arousing or likely to arouse - although that's often what the word is used to mean.

    I hope that helps.

    Nikki
