Awake and calling
in the quiet dark:
You who.
Who you?
I'm here.
Are you?
Where to?

The usual translation of the barred owl's call is " Who cooks for you?" an inane rendering of a voice calling for connection from the deep dark of the forest.
For Laura.

Perfect.
One night last summer we had a barred owl in a tree next to our bedroom window. It seemed like it was talking to us.
Once a few years ago I remember walking into an empty room and feeling a strong presence. Then I saw a barred owl perched right outside the window on the handle of a snow shovel. I later heard it was a hard winter for owls because the snow was covered with ice and rodents were scarce.
Great title!
Great read, Dianne. Thanks so much. Once in a very great while we seem to hear something through the species barrier, or see in a creature's eyes, that we in some way know one another, or wish to. So there's that.
