Reading Thomas Aquinas

by P.R. Mercado

If you loved me the way I love you,
I would cause you misery so pure
you can collect it with your hands,
smear it on the walls, drink it
to wake you up in the morning,
or keep you from sleeping at night.
God's benevolence has saved you
the way his justice has damned me.
I know we will be redeemed
because no suffering like this
can belong here, with us, purely.
Something greater than us
must have made me this way:
Longing for sincere annihilation.
