Rebels In The Hills
by Iddhis Bing
The coast is clear - the revolt has been put down - the port is open for business - "Please continue shopping" loud and clear over the PA - 'Lousy rebels won't be back for a thousand years,' the cop chortles as he fumbles around in my pockets...
No more nightmares, Mommy? - No more nightmares, my little sausage. But just to be safe, we've installed a surveillance camera in your bedroom. - What for, Mommy, what for? - To keep the wild things away. (Years later, taking account of her memories as she opens her legs to a stranger, daughter snickers, "Oh really, Mommy." - Blam blam. Man says, "Who are you talking to?")
Only later you realize - None of what they told you is true. The hills are full of rebels.

Steve Finan raises an interesting question, to which I add two more: why are the first 100 pages of many novels so much better than the latter 2/3s? And why do i find it more intriguing when the orchestra is tuning up than when they are playing their predetermined roles? Curiosity comes way before understanding.
Late arriving confession: the best line in the story, None of what they told you is true - comes from Diane Arbus's journals. I carried it around in my head long enough - I had to put it somewhere.
