unbearable

by Gary Percesepe

i

long night stretches out

            before me

an orphan's empty bowl

ii

drink

(she drinks)

until her problems

seem compact & pretty

something you can admire alone

iii

death like the lobby of a hotel

you were just leaving

or a well-lit room

you could enter at will

better than beauty

iv

that summer I didn't see her:

her hot breath

notched with whiskey

she dropped a wine glass

in the pool

it floated lazily down

i let myself imagine being married to her

in a wistful way

that returned me

to childhood

someone who promised to take care of you

without words

to notice if you were sad or

freaked or

liked your underwear folded

the silent promise that like addicts' tracks

your lives would be more interesting

at intersections

v

instead

a woman's back in a low cut black dress

your wife in another room
