Dog Days

by Gary Percesepe

Those years were hellish I'll admit

then they were done with her and came

at me furiously   hell hounds of divorce and

sadness biting my ankles and sending me

lurching again through the K-Mart parking lot

but she looked relieved when I resurfaced

and collapsed into my arms so we fell in love

under the pink cherry tree that still stands

bearing witness to it all   and sure we can laugh

now about the days of peril and about the fear

we both felt and how we imagined the worst

even getting philosophical at times because

after all it's just our backyard and we can

afford a little breakage and those funny dogs

slowly limped off to wander down by the crystal sea.
